Since last Sunday, and until 15 January, the shrimp fishery in Sergipe, in northeastern Brazil, will be closed.
During this period the capture, storage, processing, commercialization and industrialization of pink, seabob and white shrimp varieties is prohibited, Globo reported.
"This is the period when the shrimp reproduce and these species constitute an important resource source for various sectors of society that trade them," said Silvio Santos, regional superintendent of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA).
According to statistics from IBAMA, in 2014 Sergipe produced more than 1,000 tonnes of seabob shrimp, 136 tonnes of white shrimp and 12 tonnes of pink shrimp.
Those who are caught breaching the closure period may face fines of up to BRL 100,000 (about USD 25,240), plus a fine of BRL 20 (USD 5) per kilo of seized shrimp and the confiscation of their fishing equipment.
